Steve Downie on Rick Tocchet and Joining the Penguins

Downie on Tocchet: ‘When he speaks, you listen’

His best season in that regard came in 2009-10 with the Tampa Bay Lightning who were coached by Rick Tocchet. No stranger to hard play during his career as a power forward, was largely credited with reigning in Downie that season. As a result, Downie scored a career-best 22 goals.

Downie and Tocchet, who each made their marks as players with the rough and tumble Philadelphia Flyers, have been reunited in Pittsburgh of all places. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach this past offseason while Downie was signed to a one-year, $1 million contracts.

Recently, Downie talked about his relationship with Tocchet, his history and dealing with otosclerosis, a disease which impairs his hearing.
