Deryk Engelland Returns to Calgary
Deryk Engelland excited to return to fold with Calgary Flames
After scoring a three-way deal and an invite to main camp with the Flames in 2003, Engelland split his rookie campaign between the ECHL’s Las Vegas Wranglers and the AHL’s Lowell Lock Monsters.
With the likes of Mark Giordano and Mike Commodore toiling in Lowell in 2004-05 and a lockout at hockey’s highest level, Engelland would spend the entire winter in Sin City.
That marked the end of his first stint in the Flames system, with the bruising blueliner — and willing scrapper — suiting up for the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays and Reading Royals and the AHL’s Hershey Bears and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins before finally logging his first NHL appearance with the Pittsburgh Penguins at the ripe ol’ age of 27.
