EDMONTON — The teenager knew he couldn’t move mountains.

But he figured he could at least approach one.

Deryk Engelland, mere months after the New Jersey Devils made him a sixth-round selection at the 2000 National Hockey League draft, had been eager to do his thing — to show off his meat-and-potatoes approach — at camp.

“So I kind of rubbed out Scott Stevens,” says Engelland, chuckling at the memory.

And?

“He gave me a cross-check and told me not to effin’ hit him ever again,” the Calgary Flames defenceman continues. “That took me by surprise. I didn’t hit him that hard. But coming from him? You kind of take it in and make sure you don’t do it again. He’s huge. Those types of guys, you just steer clear of.”
