Chris Neil vs Brendan Smith, Nov 23, 2013
For those who have wanted to see a tough team take advantage of the enforcer-less Detroit Red Wings, Saturday night's matchup with the Ottawa Senators may have provided just the flavor you wanted. En route to a 4-2 win, the Senators crashed and banged the Red Wings all night. Not one to keep quiet in physical games, Sens mainstay Chris Neil goaded Wings defenseman Brendan Smith into a fight midway through the second period. Neil overpowered Smith at the start of the fight, switching hands a couple times in the initial exchange. Smith hung in and returned fire with two straight lefts. Neil countered and took the fight over, mixing uppercuts with overhand rights in an emotional fight. The consensus on our site gives the fight to Chris Neil, but credits Smith — who now has five NHL fights to his name and is ten years younger than Neil — for hanging tough.
